Fox News wins highest July ratings ever to beat cable rivals CNN, MSNBC

Fox News beat its cable news rivals in July, helped by a jam-packed news week that made it the cable network’s most-watched month ever, according to data from the Nielsen Research Center.

The high viewership was boosted by coverage of former President Donald Trump’s assassination attempt, the Republican National Convention and President Joe Biden’s announcement that he would suspend his re-election campaign.

According to Nielsen, the right-leaning network was the most-watched cable news network during these events, far outpacing rivals CNN and MSNBC.

“Jesse Watters Primetime” led the charge with its highest month since the show premiered at 8 p.m. The show — which beat The Five’s streak as Fox’s top show — brought in 4.4 million viewers and nearly 600,000 viewers in the demo.

“The Five” wasn’t far behind, averaging 3.9 million viewers with nearly 400,000 viewers in the 25-54 demo.

Overall in primetime, Fox blew away its rivals, averaging about 3.5 million viewers and roughly 500,000 in the demo. Meanwhile, left-leaning MSNBC brought in about 1.2 million viewers and 82,000 in the demo.

Struggling CNN — whose core lineup includes “Anderson Cooper 360” and “The Source with Kaitlan Collins” — drew 856,000 viewers and just over 200,000 in the demo.

In daytime programming, Fox News averaged about 1.9 million viewers per month, with more than 260,000 of those in the advertiser-coveted 25-54 demographic.

Meanwhile, MSNBC averaged 721,000 viewers and 82,000 in the key demo, while CNN averaged 523,000 viewers and 111,000 in the demo.

In previous election years in 2020 and 2016, both MSNBC and CNN have dropped viewers by double digits while Fox has gained, Nielsen data found.

Fox’s total viewership was up 17% in daytime and 15% in primetime compared to 2020, while CNN lost more than 40% in daytime and primetime viewers, and MSNBC also fell roughly 40% across the board.
